Tam Man Ching Michelle
Statement
Michelle’s current practice centers around species politics and otherness, speculating reverse ecological politics. With a focus on language and materiality of films, biomaterials and found objects, she creates mirroring viewfinders that respond to contingencies – to locate and navigate oneself amidst evolutionary theories, neocolonialism, and geopolitics. The loosely connected elements open slippages where interchangeabilities and entangled empathy could be evoked.
This series takes algae as a key to look at species politics and the epistemology of evolution theories, exploring fissures within the hegemony-defined objectivities. Having moved to an inland city from a coastal city, Michelle’s interest in algae hinges on the absence of the sea and the organisms drifting around. She is fascinated by their undefined nature, which holds extreme biological qualities and ecological impacts, while having been lingering on the periphery of earth science. Recently she is observing how the feelers of the transnational blue economy are stretching over to algaculture under Southeast Asian waters.
