Salvatore Pione

Statement

Pione's artistic practice is deeply rooted in the customs and traditions of his native Sicily, drawing on the rich tapestry of his childhood experiences. His work intertwines traditional craft and ancient materials, weaving complex narratives that evoke the sensations of life in Sicily. This backdrop of Sicilian heritage encompassing color, sound, dialect, and mythology serves as a wellspring for his creative research, which he strives to preserve and protect through his art. A prominent feature of Pione's work is the infusion of queer narratives that challenge the entrenched machismo and strong Catholic culture of Italy. His depictions often feature hyper-masculine figures in homoerotic scenes, characterized by feminized features. This personal approach creates a dialogue between past and present, merging traditional elements with a grotesque theatricality that questions and subverts historical conventions.
