Michelle Lee Johnson

Statement

I work across sculpture, moving image, sound, and installation. I am interested in ghosts, scraps, and disintegration — attending to these residues becomes my process to address material subjectivity. Often with a humorous, kitsch, or absurb tone, my work explores the dialectic generated within unresolved contradictions experienced between polarities: belonging and alienation; care and neglect; queerness and conformity; mundane and absurd; desire and disgust. My practice engages with themes of body through a queer lens and interrogates systems of precarity.
