Matilde Araoz Ellis
Statement
My current practice explores spaces that exist in a fragile balance, interconnected by economic histories and geopolitics of mining. I have been looking at storytelling as a coping mechanism for miners in the context of the dangerous working conditions of both Cornish and Bolivian tin mines and the entanglement of these stories with the dependency of the workers on the mines.
A crucial part of my creative process has been retelling and reimagining stories: historically, mythically and speculatively. Through these processes the
work weaves through existing folklore and collaging of my reimagination of
the stories to make sense of unknowable landscapes.
