Julia Kotziamani
Statement
Julia Kotziamani’s work explores relational dynamics, the dialectics of institutional selves, and the conditions of living and working as a single mother in poverty. She is interested the performance and visual language of the legal system, escape rooms, and in complex narrative structures. She explores mechanisms for storytelling, especially when that is obfuscated by legal silencing, ethics and psychiatric disruption. Having experienced more than 40 legal hearings, and a bought of post-partum psychosis, her recent work unpacks the way we can tell our stories under the complexities of scrutiny, censorship and mental unreliability.
A kind of collage-essay, her work takes many forms including writing, paper cutting, installation, relational events, performance, and film. She is fascinated by the social economy of digital identity and uses lots of digital ephemera, memes and short-form, fragmentary content in her work. Julia also loves gothic horror and absurdist memoirs.
