İlke Şahin

Statement

In my art practice, I blend architecture, sculpture, installation, film, material performances, lyricism, and chemistry. I explore the unsensible force and tactile encounters of entities that self-harm or self-destroy. These entities can be different subjects in each work: skin conditions and itching with their intertwined connections with psychological, the act of rubbing salt into the wound and scratching old scars, or materials like calcium chloride, which chemically disintegrates into a liquid.

My investigations take form through material-based research and performative sculptures-installations that resonate with situations paralleling my skin and being as a bodily entity. I work with materials that inevitably change and transform, relating to these materials and the environment not just as mediums but as active participants in my research. In this context, observing the reaction of calcium chloride and its effect on copper in my recent works magnifies the self-destructive process of materials. I am intrigued by the tender, festering nature and contingency within these materials and perceivers unversed in them.
