Ellen Gilbert

Statement

Ellen’s research-based practice revolves around the ethereal interplay between the human body, the digital realm, and the natural environment. Influenced by her continuous exploration of how social media and the burgeoning digital economy reshape societal dynamics, impacting human behaviour and well-being. Her research methods are diverse, ranging from immersing herself in off-grid woodland communities to attending conferences on the ethics of technology, and partaking in an 8-month Consciously Digital training program. In these settings, she absorbs and transforms these profound experiences and discussions into artworks, often creating costumes and performances as part of her immersive process.

Using her body as the primary medium, Ellen engages in directed and remote- controlled performances for the camera, crafting narrative-driven stills and moving image series. Her video works manifest as visual and cinematic essays. These pieces challenge notions of digital well-being, autonomy, and surveillance, offering a reflective mirror on the paradoxes of our contemporary existence and the way we feel, live, and communicate in today’s world. Furthermore, her works play with our sense of time, blending past, present, and future into fictional narratives that question our perception of temporal reality.
